We pride ourselves on being a fully owned and family run business. We are not a managing agent, as all the properties are owned and managed and maintained by ourselves, guaranteeing a professional, personal and efficient service. This offers tenants many advantages as there is no third party to consider. Prospective tenants can be offered properties with very few set up costs or fees and a prompt and efficient maintenance service is provided. We can also offer clients advice and assistance particularly when coming out of employment and onto benefits, as many tenants often face eviction from their landlords when they lose their jobs and are faced with long benefit delays and possible rent arrears accruing.
Our History
The company was founded in 1919 by Geoffrey E Palmer as a property and insurance agency. Mr Palmer passed away in the early 1950s and the business was acquired by Mr George Taylor, who continued trading until his retirement in the early 1970s, when he sold the estate agency arm of the business but continued to run the insurance agency and manage two investment properties he had acquired from his home. George passed away in 1976 leaving the business to his son Roger, who at the time was in the Car Sales business. On acquiring the business Roger decided to dispose of his interests in the two garage sites which he operated at the time and to devote his time to building up the property side of the company. Using this income he acquired some further buildings to add to the portfolio of two. His wife Brenda assisted him with the bookkeeping and administration as the company secretary. Roger decided to dispose of the insurance agency side of the business to a local insurance broker.
The company continued to grow steadily over the next few years and increased the portfolio from two to eight buildings, which were mostly converted into Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) which are non-self-contained bedsitters. In 1984 Roger and Brenda’s eldest son Brandon came into the business as General Manager.
Brandon realised that there was further room for growth, but not as HMO accommodation as these types of buildings are very management intensive with transient lets. For longer term lets, Brandon realised the future was in self-contained accommodation as he saw there was a growing demand for affordable good quality self-contained one and two bedroom flats.
Under Brandon’s management, the company accelerated in expansion, acquiring further buildings for conversion into Self-Contained flats. Over the course of the next few years not only did the company expand greatly into this market but they re-visited the earlier properties they had acquired and converted these from HMOs into self-contained units. The local authority welcomed this move away from HMO accommodation and supported the company through grant schemes linked with nomination rights from the local housing register.
This trend has continued and the business is now one of the largest independently owned property companies in the region.
During these years the company continued to run from Roger and Brenda’s home address with a small unmanned sub-office being located at the rear of one of the buildings in London Road South. In 1997 the company re-sited its office location to 21 Station Square which was staffed with an office manager Monday to Friday.
Roger passed away in August 2005 leaving his wife Brenda and son Brandon to continue the legacy. Since that time Brandon has taken over his late father’s role as Company Chairman and continued to project manage each new renovation and oversees the day to day running of the business along with negotiating new acquisitions. Brenda continued in the role as Company Secretary until October 2021, when Brandon’s wife Janine took over the role.
In addition to the family, the business employs an Office Manager, who is the first point of contact for most clients. The company also commissions a variety of local sub-contractors who carry out maintenance to the existing properties along with ongoing refits and elements of the extensive conversion projects which the company undertakes.
In 2013 the company expanded its office into the building next door at 19 Station Square. This building had been acquired a few years before but had an existing tenant on the ground floor. When that tenant decided to vacate, the time was just right for the company to expand into it having outgrown the office they were in. The company’s trading address is now 19/21 Station Square.
